Course Details

This course is for adults who are currently working at entry level who would like to gain a nationally recognised Functional Skills English qualification. As part of this programme you will spend 3 weeks developing your study skills and will also take part in a Living in the UK workshop. While studying for your Functional Skills qualification, you will develop your speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. You will be given advice and guidance about the best starting point for you. You will be encouraged to attend regularly. You will be working to develop your skills in English to gain a qualification at either Entry 1, Entry 2 or Entry 3.

Entry Requirements

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

  • Been a resident of the UK/EU for the past three years.
  • Proof of immigration status

When you enrol with us we will ask you to complete a simple test. If your level of English is above this level, then we will refer you to that level English course. We do this to make sure you are studying at the right level to ensure your personal growth and development.

You will be encouraged to attend regularly. When you have completed this course, you can progress onto the next stage of learning English. Our English courses progress all the way to Functional Skills Level 2 which is the same complexity as a GCSE English Qualification and is regarded as an equivalent Level 2 qualification with employers when looking for jobs.

Learning in a supportive environment, away from the demands of normal life, where professional teaching, differentiated for individual need, will support understanding, progression and individual achievement. This class will enable you to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of English enabling you to gain a qualification in English by the end of the course. As the course progresses you should be able to participate more fully in everyday life and become more employable.

Teaching:

All learning is supportive and safe and where professional teaching is individualised to the requirements of each learner. Learning support will be provided by the tutor. You will be taught in a classroom situation with one to one, pairs and small group work, discussion and themed activities using materials that are designed for adults. Full participation will require you to find some time to complete homework, which will be marked and commented on by the tutor with guidance to help you to know how to improve.

How will progress be monitored and assessed?

Your individual learning goals will be agreed at the beginning of the course and recorded on your individual learning plan. The ILP will be used throughout the course to assess your progress. Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion. The tutor will assess your learning during the sessions and will provide you with individual feedback. You will be asked to provide feedback of your learning experience via a questionnaire.

Qualification:

You will be working towards a nationally recognised qualification in English. On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a certificate in Functional Skills English either at Level 1 or Level 2.

After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?

This course can provide a way for you to progress onto the next Functional Skills level or to GCSE English. Gaining a qualification at Level 2 can provide an entry point into a wide variety of career options and other further study.

Equipment Required:

You may wish to bring a note pad and pen/pencil and start to make your own reference notes. Any other materials you need for the course are provided by us.
