This course is for adults who would like to gain a nationally recognised English qualification.  You will work towards a Functional Skills English qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2.  The first four weeks of the course will help to prepare you for studying by incorporating study skills sessions and a letter of application workshop.

Course Details:

This course runs for 28 weeks at 2.5 hours per lesson.

When you enrol with us, we will ask you to complete a simple test. If your level of English is above this level, then we will refer you to that level English course. We do this to make sure you are studying at the right level to ensure your personal growth and development.

You will be encouraged to attend regularly.  Our Functional Skills Level 2 qualification is the same complexity as a GCSE English qualification and is regarded as an equivalent Level 2 qualification with employers when looking for jobs. 

You will work towards a nationally recognised qualification which will help you to progress onto further study or to progress in the workplace. You will also gain skills which will support you in everyday life.  You will learn in a supportive environment, away from the demands of normal life.  Your tutor will support you with your learning, enabling you to progress and achieve.  You will develop your skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing.  

Entry Requirements:

You will need to have at least Entry Level 3 skills before joining the Progression to Functional Skills English (Level 1 / Level2) course. 

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

  • Been a resident of the UK/ EU for the past three years.
  • Proof of immigration status
  • Aged 19+
  • You will need to complete an assessment before you join the course and advice will be given as to the suitability of the course for you. 
  • You must be committed to attending regularly and completing home study.

Teaching:

At Sandwell Adult and Family Learning (SAFL) you will be taught in a classroom situation with one-to-one, pairs and small group work, discussion, role play and themed practical activities.  This will provide you with lots of opportunities to develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.

 

How will progress be monitored and assessed?

Your personal learning goals will be agreed at the beginning of the course and recorded on your personal learning plan (PLP).  The PLP will be used throughout the course to assess your progress.  Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion.  Your tutor will assess your learning during the sessions and will provide you with individual feedback.  You will be asked to provide feedback of your learning experience via a questionnaire.  As part of the course you will take speaking and listening assessments and at the end of the course you will take a reading exam and a writing exam.  

 

Qualification:

You will be able to work towards a nationally recognised qualification in English. On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills English (Level 1) or a Certificate in Functional Skills English (Level 2).   You will be given advice and guidance about the best starting point for you.

 

After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?

This course can provide progression onto the next Functional Skills level or to GCSE English. Gaining a qualification at Level 2 can provide an entry point into a wide variety of career options and other further study.

You may wish to bring a note pad, pen/pencil and a dictionary. Any other materials you need for the course are provided by us.
