Course Details:
This course is designed for parents and will help you to develop your own English skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening, which will enable you to support your children and to develop your own skills enabling you to progress onto a qualification. The course is offered 3 different levels to suit learner needs: pre-entry, entry, level 1 and level 2. Classes are taught for 2 hours, once a week.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Read and comprehend a text and answer questions about it in writing.
- Gain confidence in using tense and subject-verb agreement correctly in written and spoken English.
- Use conjunctions to join simple sentences together to create compound sentences.
- Confidently ask and answer questions in English.
- Personal targets will also be agreed.
Entry Requirements:
You will need to complete an assessment before you join the course so that you can be placed on the most appropriate course to meet your needs. You must be committed to attending regularly and completing home study.

The benefits of this course:
This course will enable you to revise and learn new skills away from the stresses of normal family life. You will have a qualified tutor and will have the opportunity to ask questions and improve your skills. At the end of the course, your tutor will advise you of your progression routes which may include further English for Parents courses or a Functional Skills English qualification course.
Teaching:
All learning is supportive and safe, where professional teaching is individualised to the requirements of each learner. You will be taught in a classroom situation with one to one, paired and small group work, discussion and themed activities using materials that are designed for adults. Full participation will require you to find some time to complete homework, which will be marked and commented on by the tutor with guidance to help you to know how to improve.
How will progress be monitored and assessed?
Your individual learning goals will be agreed at the beginning of the course and recorded on your individual learning plan. The ILP will be used throughout the course to assess your progress. Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion. The tutor will assess your learning during the sessions and will provide you with individual feedback. You will be asked to provide feedback of your learning experience via a questionnaire.
Qualification
A Sandwell adult and family learning (SAFL) certificate will be awarded at the end of the course, when you have achieved your agreed learning outcomes.
After completing this course?
At the end of this course you may feel confident to progress to another SAFL course, including Maths, Digital Skills or an accredited English course.
Equipment Required:
A pen and paper, other learning materials are provided
