Sow and Grow

Course Details:

This course is for schools or groups to offer to their parents or network. The course will be run and managed by Sandwell Adult and Family Learning service at your venue so that your members can study and attend at somewhere they are already familiar with and able to travel to. 

This course offers parents/carers the opportunity to work with their children to develop the knowledge and skills to grow their own fruit and vegetables at school and at home.  It provides the opportunity to enjoy learning together through a range of gardening activities. 

You must attend a minimum of 4 out of 5 sessions.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Grow your own fruit and vegetables.
  • Create a bug hotel.
  • Understand why insects are important when growing plants.  
  • Use a range of gardening tools. 
  • Enjoy learning together through range of fun gardening activities.
  • Personal targets will also be agreed.

Entry Requirments:

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

  • Been a resident of the UK for the past three years.
  • Proof of immigration status
  • Aged 19+
  • Are related to a child in a Sandwell school e.g. parents, carer, guardian, grandparent, aunt or uncle.

What are the benefits of the course?

You and your family will have the opportunity to work in a supported environment where professional teaching, differentiated for individual need will support understanding, progression and individual achievement. You will develop the knowledge and skills to grow vegetables and fruit at home with your children. You and your children will have the opportunity to ask questions.  You will be able to interact with your children in an informal and fun way away from the demands of family life.  You will also be able to find out about other available courses.

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

Your individual learning goals will be agreed at the beginning of the course and recorded on your individual learning plan.  The ILP will be used throughout the course to assess your progress.  Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities and through group discussion.  The tutor will assess your learning during the sessions and will provide you with individual feedback.  You will be asked to provide feedback of your learning experience via a questionnaire.

What qualification will I get?

An in house SAFL certificate will be provided when learners have achieved their agreed learning outcomes.

After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?

At the end of this course you may feel confident to progress to another SAFL course, for example an accredited English course.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no fees charged to you. Your course fees are paid for through the West Midlands Combined Authority, which is government funding. 

Equipment Required

A pen and writing paper.

 

 

This course runs for 5 weeks 1.5 hours per week. Split into 45 minutes with parents and then 45 minutes with parents and children together.
