Course Details

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

It’s aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

Entry Requirements

Learners are expected to have their own placement within a school or college in order to be observed in the workplace.  The placement should be working with children aged 5 years or older. 

This course requires you to have a good level of ICT (Entry 3 for classroom based and L1 for online) and English skills (you will need to have achieved Grade D or Grade 3 GCSE English or L1 Functional Skills.  L1 ESOL will not be accepted) in order to support achievement, progression and eventual employment. Before you can join this course, you will be required to complete an initial assessment in one of our centres.

As the course involves working with children and young people, you will be required to complete a qualification in Safeguarding Adults and Children prior to the start of the course.  This will be completed online.  You will also need a DBS check.  If you do not have an in date enhanced DBS, SAFL will process your DBS free of charge.  In order to start the course, you must ensure that you have valid documents for the DBS check. 

DBS Requirements

In order to start the course, you must have the following documentation available for a DBS check.  All documents must be in date:

You must have one of the following:

  • Current and valid passport
  • UK Biometric residence permit
  • Current Driving Licence
  • Birth Certificate issued within 12 months of birth
  • Adoption certificate

It is important that you are available to attend all your classes as non-attendance reduces your ability to achieve on your course.

Teaching

All the classes are run by a qualified and experienced tutor. Learners will attend set classes each week and experience a variety of learning activities including tutor demonstration, practical activities, role-play, direct workplace observations, group discussion and research. 

It is important that learners attend all classes, as not attending reduces their ability to achieve on the course.

How will progress be monitored and assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: written assignments and direct observations.

Qualification

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning; all required units need to be achieved.
