Course Details:

This course offers you the opportunity to learn the techniques and skills required to cut and sew basic garments. You will learn how to make patterns, insert zips, different types of hems, buttonholes by hand and using the sewing machine, and attach different fasteners e.g. hook and eye, snap fasteners. You will also learn to set up the sewing machine and learn to use different functions and tools of the sewing machine.

By the end of this course:

You will be able to:

To make personalised patterns
Attach different of fasteners to different types of openings on garments.
Set up and use different functions of the sewing machine e.g. attach and use zip and buttonhole foot.

Entry Requirements:

This course is suitable for complete beginners, intermediate or advanced learners.

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

Been a resident of the UK/EU for the past three years.
Aged 19+

What are the benefits of this course?

This class will enable you to revise and learn new skills in an informal and fun way, away from the stresses of normal family life. You will have the opportunity to work in an adult environment and have access to a qualified adult and family learning tutor. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and to improve your sewing skills. You will also be able to find out about other available courses.

How will I learn?

All of our teaching and learning is provided in an environment that is exclusive to adults; this is supportive and safe and where professional teaching is individualised to the requirements of each learner, individual progression in learning is the goal. Learning support will be provided by the tutor. Teaching is through practical activities, demonstration, one to one support, informative handouts and discussion. You will also be able to find out about other available courses.

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

Learning goals are agreed at the beginning of the course between you and your tutor; they are recorded on your individual learning plan. The ILP is used throughout the course to assess how your learning and achievement goals are progressing. The tutor will assess your learning during the sessions and will provide supportive feedback to you. You will be asked to provide feedback about your learning experience via a questionnaire.

What qualification will I get?

An in house SAFL certificate will be provided when you have achieved your agreed learning outcomes.

After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?

At the end of this course you will be able to enrol on further SAFL or college courses. You may also feel confident to progress to another SAFL course, including Maths, ICT or an accredited English course.

Equipment Required

Learner will need a standard tape measure, pins, sewing needles, tailors chalk, dressmaking scissors, pattern paper, stationery, folder, fabric, thread and a bobbin.
