Then this course may be for you.

This course is for adults who are looking to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of Maths, in order to achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills Maths, either at Entry 1, Entry 2 or Entry 3 level.

Course Details

When you enrol with us we will ask you to complete a simple test. If your level of Maths is above this level then we will refer you to that level Maths course. We do this to make sure you are studying at the right level to ensure your personal growth and development.

You will be encouraged to attend regularly.  

Entry Requirements:

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

  • Been a resident of the UK/EU for the past three years.

  • Proof of immigration status
  • ​Aged 19+

The benefits of this course

Learners will develop their maths skills within a range of skill areas. This may include carrying out calculations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages, shape and space; money, time, weight, capacity, area and volume and handling data; how to interpret graphs, charts and find statistical averages from sets of data.


At Sandwell Adult and Family Learning (SAFL) you will be taught in a classroom situation with one-to-one, pairs and small group work, discussion, role play and themed practical activities.  This will provide you with lots of opportunities to develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.

How will progress be monitored and assessed?

Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion. You will complete an individual Personal Learning Plan and reflect on your own progress each week in a Personal learning journal. Your tutor will provide you with both written and verbal feedback on how you can progress and develop your skills on a weekly basis.


You will be able to work towards a nationally recognised qualification in Maths from the NCFE. On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills Maths Entry 1, Entry 2 or Entry 3. 

You will be given advice and guidance about the best starting point for you.

After completing this course, could I progress onto a:nother course?

This course can provide progression onto the next Functional Skills level.
