Course Details

This learning pathway is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required when working as a classroom assistant directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour, their communication and professional relationships. You will require a placement in a school or college but should be working with children aged 5 years or older.  You must work at entry 3 ICT for classroom based and L1 for online You will need to have achieved L1 Functional Skills English as a minimum. Prior to being offered a place, you must complete the online module, Safeguarding children in education. You will also need a DBS check, if required, SAFL will process your DBS free of charge, you must ensure that you have valid documents for the DBS check. It is important that you are available to attend all your classes as non-attendance reduces your ability to achieve on your course.

Course Content

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning Mandatory units include:

• Understand Schools and Colleges as Organisations
• Understand Children and Young People’s Development
• Safeguarding Children and Young People
• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in a Learning Environment for Children and Young People
• Maintain Relationships with Children and Young People
• Support the Health and Safety of Children and Young People
• Support Positive Behaviour in a Learning Environment for Children and Young People
• Contribute to Teamwork in a Learning Environment Understand Children and Young People’s Play and Leisure
• Promote an Effective Learning Environment Provide Displays in a Learning Environment. 

You will also have to complete two online modules:

• Healthy Eating – an online module to increase your knowledge of a healthy eating plan, this will support your understanding of a balanced and nutritious diet.
• Introduction to Neurodiversity – an online module to increase your understanding of what neurodiversity is and identifying some of the common conditions.

Who is the course for?

It’s aimed at learners who are currently volunteering in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary, special schools or colleges. It is also for learners who are new to school environments and wish to pursue the teaching assistant role as their chosen career.

How will I be taught and assesssed?

All the classes are run by qualified and experienced tutors. Learners will attend set classes each week and experience a variety of learning activities including tutor demonstration, practical activities, role-play, direct workplace observations, group discussion and research. During your time on the course, you will be required to have a placement in a school setting, this must be for a minimum of ½ a day per week. This will form part of the assessment criteria where you will be observed carrying out specific tasks. The remaining criteria will be portfolio based and work will be submitted throughout the course.

How can I progress?

You can progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, as an example, this is currently offered at Sandwell and Dudley College. Qualified staff will be available to offer you information, advice and guidance on progression routes and other opportunities. 

Do I need to bring my own equipment /materials?

It is advisable to bring your own workbook and pens. Learners often find it appropriate to submit their work electronically, while computers are available in the classroom, it would be beneficial for you to have access to a laptop or computer outside of class.
