Course Details
This learning pathway is designed to prepare learners for further learning and training, whilst developing an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting. You will learn how to support the well-being of a child or young person and their development. The qualification is aimed at learners who would like to work in a school setting in the future.
Course Content
The qualification comprises of three units:
- Understand schools as organisations
- understand how to keep childeren and young people healthy, safe and well
- Understand how to communicate with childeren, young people and adult
Aditionally you will be taking three online modules, which include:
- Safeguarding children workshop – an online module to increase an awareness of the signs of abuse in children and how to protect them from harm.
- E-Safety – an online module to increase the awareness of the risks posed to children and young people when online.
- School Food standards – an online module to raise awareness of the standard of nutrition and environments that schools should offer to pupils in the UK.

Who is the course for?
It’s aimed at learners who are taking their first steps into working within a school environment. It’s aimed at learners who are taking their first steps into working within a school environment. Can lead onto further qualifications within the framework of working in schools. It is targeted at learner who are working at a minimum of entry level 3 English, learners who have been away from education for some time and have a higher ability in English may also find it a good qualification to begin with.
How will I be taught and assessed?
All the classes are run by qualified and experienced tutors. Learners will attend set classes each week and experience a variety of learning activities including tutor demonstration, practical activities, role-play, group discussion and research. You will submit assignments each week and they will form your final portfolio for assessment.
How can I progress?
You can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, this qualification does require a Level 1 in English and a placement in a school. It will be advisable to focus on increasing your ability in Maths and English to support your employability opportunities. Qualified staff will be available to offer you information, advice and guidance on progression routes and other opportunities.
Do I need to bring my own equipment/materials?
It is advisable to bring your own workbook and pens. Learners can submit their work electronically if they choose to, while computers are available in the classroom, it would be beneficial for you to have access to a laptop or computer outside of class if that is your preference.
*Your course is funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority, which is government funding. Talk to your tutor about concession eligibility.
