Course Details

This course is for learners who want to improve their maths skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification.  The course is offered at Functional Skills level 1 and Functional Skills level 2.

When you enrol with us we will ask you to complete a simple test. If your level of Maths is above this level then we will refer you to that level Maths course. We do this to make sure you are studying at the right level to ensure your personal growth and development.

You will be encouraged to attend regularly.  Our Functional Skills Level 2 qualification is the same complexity as a GCSE Maths qualification and is regarded as an equivalent Level 2 qualification with employers when looking for jobs.

You will need to have at least Entry Level 3 skills before joining the Functional Skills Maths.

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

  • Been a resident of the UK/EU for the past three years.

The benefits of this course

Learners will develop their maths skills within a range of skill areas. This may include carrying out calculations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages, shape and space; money, time, weight, capacity, area and volume and handling data; how to interpret graphs, charts and find statistical averages from sets of data.

For the online course all of the materials will be available for you to view anytime each week. There will be an assigned tutor who will be on hand to help with any questions, guidance, help or advice you need whilst studying using the online materials. At present you will be required to attend the centre in small groups in order to complete your assessment due to the conditions set by the examining body. We are looking into how we can can change and minimise this.

For blended courses, you will study 1 week in the classroom and 1 weekn studying from home on a rolling basis for the full length of the course. The classroom based classes are taught at a set time and place and the home studying can be done at anytime in that week. This course is tutor led and they will be available both when in the classroom and outside of those hours to provide help and support with your learning.

You will be taught in a with one-to-one, pairs and small group work, discussion, role play and themed practical activities.  This will provide you with lots of opportunities to develop your Maths skills.

For this course you would need to commit approximately 2.5 hours a week to complete your study.

How will progress be monitored and assessed?

Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion. You will complete an individual Personal Learning Plan and reflect on your own progress each week in a Personal learning journal. Your tutor will provide you with both written and verbal feedback on how you can progress and develop your skills on a weekly basis.

You will be able to work towards a nationally recognised qualification in Maths from the NCFE. On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills Maths (Level 1) or a Certificate in Functional Skills Maths (Level 2).

You will be given advice and guidance about the best starting point for you.

After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?

This course can provide progression onto the next Functional Skills level or to GCSE Maths. Gaining a qualification at Level 2 can provide an entry point into a wide variety of career options and other further study.
