Becoming a Volunteer

Volunteering can be a great way to help others, gain experience and to develop yourself. 


Making the decision to become a volunteer can difficult and you might be concerned that volunteering is not the right thing for you to do. This short course is intended to help you make that decision by supporting you to:

  • Look at what options may be available to you considering your personal circumstances, interests and future goals
  • Consider what skills you have to offer
  • Look at ways to achieve any new skills you may need
  • Research opportunities in the local area
  • Practice applying for volunteer vacancies
  • Plan your next steps

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.  

You will need to provide evidence that you have any of the following:

  • Been a resident of the UK/EU for the past three years.

  • Proof of immigration status
  • ​Aged 19+

What are the benefits of this course?

This course will help you to make the most of your skills and decide on appropriate ways you can volunteer. Here at SAFL we also have a great connection with Sandwell's SCVO who are actively involved in sharing the opportunities for volunteers within Sandwell. 

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

Progression will be monitored through activities and discussion. Feedback will be given verbally and in writing on individual learning plans for each learner.

What qualification will I get?

An in house SAFL certificate will be provided when you have achieved your agreed learning outcomes.

After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?

At the end of this course you may feel confident to progress to another SAFL course, including Maths, ICT or an accredited English course. The Tutor will discuss next steps towards the end of the course and suggest further courses/qualifications that may be appropriate.  We also have I.A.G qualified staff who could advise learners on progression and other opportunities.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no fees charged to you. This course is fully funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority.
