The content of the course is designed to help progress in English from basic entry level to gain a nationally recognised qualification. You will develop detailed knowledge, skills and application of English. This course runs for 24 weeks at 2.5 hours per lesson. You will be given advice and guidance about the best starting point for you. Please ask for details when enquiring.
You will need to complete an initial assessment before joining the English class. This includes a piece of writing and advice will be given as to the suitability of the course for you.

Improve your skills and knowledge of:
• Speaking and listening using spoken English effectively
• Reading and understanding be able to get and use information from different sources.
• Writing use words in a conventional way to get your meaning across.
The course will introduce English skills from the very foundations, making English more understandable. As the course progresses learners should be able to participate more fully in everyday life, support their children’s learning and become more employable.
You will be taught in an adult only venue, using materials that are designed for adults. There is likely to be a lot of conversation and shared learning, whole group work and individual learning with time to practice all of the learnt skills. The course will provide lots of opportunities to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
How will progress be monitored and assessed?
Marking and feedback will often happen during the class where the tutor will guide and support you to achieve your session target.
Progression will be monitored through assessment of practical activities, marking of completed work and homework will be issued and marked with guidance and feedback to help you to improve. Your tutor will let you know how the final assessment tasks fit into the course.
You will be asked to complete an individual Personal Learning Plan and reflect on your own progress each week in a Personal learning journal. Your tutor will support your learning with both written and verbal feedback on how you can progress and develop your skills on a weekly basis.
During and at the end of the course there is an opportunity to let us know how you feel about your experiences as a learner with SAFL. We want to know how you got on and value what you have to say.
You will be working towards a nationally recognised qualification in English. On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills English.
After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?
Gaining a qualification can provide an entry point to a variety of further study opportunities. This course can provide a way for you to go onto the next Functional Skills level.

This course is government funded. There are no fees charged to you for this course.
