I am delighted to announce that Sandwell Adult Family Learning has achieved a Good rating from Ofsted in their recent inspection.

Erroll Blackwood, Tonia Green and the SAFL team spent four days with five inspectors from 16th – 19th January and passed the inspection with flying colours. There were a number of areas came out strongly in the report:

o    Management and leadership were scrutinised thoroughly, including a challenging meeting with the governing board, where the council’s clear vision and strategy for service development was applauded.

o    Teaching, learning and assessment were rigorously observed and the tutors were seen to be knowledgeable, have high aspirations for their learners and use a variety of effective strategies for learning.

o    Outcomes for learners were reviewed with the majority of current learners making positive progress from their starting points and developing the appropriate knowledge, skills and understanding. It was also noted that retention and achievement rates for learners on courses are very high. In particular, employability and English provision shine brightly and achievement gaps have narrowed.

o     In personal development, behaviour and welfare the inspectors saw well motivated learners. They attend well, feel safe, know how to protect themselves from extremism and radicalisation and have improved their confidence through learning new skills –  which is exactly what adult learning should be about!

This is a really important outcome for Sandwell residents. In an area where a high proportion of adults have no qualifications and reduced job prospects, services like SAFL are an essential step ladder to qualifications and improved employment opportunities. I’m sure the team won’t be resting on their laurels and are already focusing on moving the service to ‘Outstanding’ at the next inspection to give our residents the best possible adult learning provision in the region.

Well done to the whole team!
