Bridging the Gap: English Level 1 Plus
To develop learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding of English, in order to progress onto a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification course. This course incorporates an NCFE Preparing to Learn qualification to aid learners with their study skills. This course runs for 8 weeks at 2.5 hours per lesson.
Learners will need to have Level 1 Functional Skills qualification or a proportion of Level 2 skills in English before joining the Bridging the Gap: English Level 1 Plus course. They will be asked to complete an assessment before they join the course which will include a piece of writing and advice will be given as to the suitability of the course for them. They must be committed to attending regularly and completing home study.

The benefits of this course:
This course will develop learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding of English enabling them to develop a foundation of Level 2 skills. Combined with gaining a Preparing to Learn qualification, learners will be equipped with the necessary study skills to effectively complete a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English.
Learners will be able to participate more fully in everyday life in a professional manner and become more employable.
They will improve their skills and knowledge of:
Reading a range of text types.
Knowing what literary devices are.
Understanding bias and inference.
Knowing what is involved in a reading exam at Level 2.
Good study habits.
Learners will be taught in a classroom situation with one-to-one, pairs and small group work, discussion and themed practical activities. This will provide learners with lots of opportunities to develop their reading, writing and study skills.
How will progress be monitored and assessed?
Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion. Learners will complete an Individual Learning Plan and reflect on their own progress each week. The Preparing to Learn qualification will be assessed through a portfolio of work completed as part of the class activities. The tutor will provide learners with both written and verbal feedback on how they can progress and develop their skills on a weekly basis.
Learners will work towards a recognised Preparing to Learn qualification at Level 1. On successful completion of this course, they will achieve a Certificate in Preparing to Learn and an in-house certificate detailing the targets that they have achieved. If they have successfully completed the course they will be able to progress directly onto a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification.
After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?
This course can provide progression onto Level 2 Functional Skills course.

There are no fees for this course.
Learners may wish to bring a note pad and pen/pencil and learn to make their own study notes. Any other materials they need for the course are provided by us.
