Functional Skills English
To develop the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding of English, in order to achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills English, either at level 1 or level 2. This course runs for 24 weeks at 2.5 hours per lesson. It is also offered as Intensive or Fast Track. Please ask for details when enquiring.
You will need to have at least Entry Level 3 skills before joining the Functional Skills English. You will be asked to complete an assessment before you join the course which will include a piece of writing and advice will be given as to the suitability of the course for you.

The benefits of this course:
Develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of English to a recognised level and gain a qualification to evidence your ability. Be able to participate more fully in everyday life in a professional manner and become more employable.
Improve your skills and knowledge of
• Speaking and listening (presentation skills)
• Reading and understanding a variety of types of text
• Writing professionally
You will be taught in a classroom situation with one-to-one, pairs and small group work, discussion, role play and themed practical activities. This will provide you with lots of opportunities to develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.
How will progress be monitored and assessed?
Progression will be monitored through assessment via observation of practical activities, marking of completed work and through group discussion. You will complete an individual Personal Learning Plan and reflect on your own progress each week in a Personal learning journal. Your tutor will provide you with both written and verbal feedback on how you can progress and develop your skills on a weekly basis.
You will be able to work towards a nationally recognised qualification in English. On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Certificate in Functional Skills English (Level 1) or a Certificate in Functional Skills English (Level 2). You will be given advice and guidance about the best starting point for you.
After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?
This course can provide progression onto the next Functional Skills level or to GCSE English. Gaining a qualification at Level 2 can provide an entry point into a wide variety of career options and other further study.
