This qualification is designed for anyone who works, or wants to work as teacher/trainer in the further education and skills sector.
You don’t have to be in a teaching role. You may have a job where delivery of training is your responsibility and you want to understand the learning process better. Or you may want a short qualification to inform you to make career choices.
You will learn about and be given an introduction to:
- The roles and responsibilities of a teacher
- The legal frame work that governs education
- Designing a learning session
- Delivering a learning session
- Educational theory
- Assessment of learning
You will have a good level of ICT, English and maths skills in order to progress and achieve. You may already hold GCSE in maths and English but before enrolment you will have to complete a formal initial assessment in English, maths and ICT. It is not an exam, the results will be discussed with you during a 1-1 interview and taken into consideration before a place on the course is offered to you.

Achieving this level 3 qualification will give you a nationally recognised qualification which can be evidenced on your CV. This course will help you develop your knowledge, skills and confidence in a range of topics centred around education and teaching in Further Education or Adult and Community Education. Providing an insight of working as a teacher/trainer and support roles within the lifelong learning sector. It may help you in making a career choice, or assist you in being able to make the most of other learning opportunities.
How will I learn?
You will make a commitment to attend one 3 hour session a week, for 16 weeks. These will be delivered by a member of our experienced and well qualified teaching staff. You will be required to do subject reading in your own time and the assignments will have to be word processed in your own time. You will be amongst other learners who will have gone through the same assessment process and you will have the course in common. There is a practical micro teaching element that you will be fully prepared for by the teaching staff.
How will my progress be monitored and assessed?
Your tutor will set 3 assignments. You will be given target dates to complete each phase of the course in preparation for the submission of your portfolio. The assignments you submit will be marked with written feedback. At any point in time your work may be selected for Internal verification. All assignments have to achieve a pass before the portfolio of evidence can be submitted. A random selection of portfolio will be called for by the external verifier who will be looking to maintain the quality assurance of the teaching and marking.
What qualification will I get?
You will gain a City and Guilds Certificate, The level 3 Award in Education and Training.
After completing this course, could I progress onto another course?
Your tutor will discuss your next steps during and towards the end of your course, suggesting further qualifications that may be appropriate. You may like to continue to study Education and progress to the Certificate in Education and Training, the details would need to be discussed with your tutor.

You will need a note pad and pen/pencil. Two folders, one leaver arch and one for presentation of your portfolio. A full reading list will be made available to learners who have enrolled. A memory stick may be useful and a personal email address is essential.
